Doctrine
The Church of God Denominational teachings are on the Virginia State Church of God site. The teachings below are a special focus of the Family Worship Center.
Our Beliefs:
- We believe that the Bible is the Word of God and that we should embrace its teachings as applicable to daily living.
- We believe that marriage is the only vehicle through we which we can enjoy the gift of sexuality. We reject as unacceptable therefore co-habitation, homosexuality and the use of pornography as a form of entertainment. We further discourage divorce as a means of resolving martial conflict since this can lead to sexual infidelity.
- We believe that regular church attendance is essential to fruitful Christian living, and that no one can speak of themselves as a biblical Christian while rejecting this principal. Attendance at public religious gatherings was customary for Christ, and is both implied and anticipated in the New Testament. Further we are specifically commanded in Hebrews 10:24, not to forsake such gatherings. We therefore reject the attitude that a person can walk in a way which is pleasing to God while rejecting this fundamental principle of corporate worship.
- We believe that tithing is the biblical plan for funding the church and its work for the kingdom of God and that all believers should develop this discipline in their lives.
- We believe in the principals of church discipline, as outlined by the apostle Paul. The full expression of this belief is too large for this format, an example regards church membership. Since the only purpose or benefit of church membership is the right to participate in business meetings we practice the revocation of membership rights for non-attendance, as well as other deeds which contradict sound doctrine.
- We believe that salvation from sin can only come through Christ following repentance, and is evidenced by an ongoing change in lifestyle.
Position Statement on Eternal Security - We Affirm:
- That God saves by His grace and that He keeps those whom He saves. John 10: 28, 29; Eph. 2: 8, 9; Jude 1:24.
- That as free moral agents we are called and empowered to cooperate with this keeping Matt 10: 22; 24:13; 2 Cor 7:1; Eph 4:30; Col 1:21-23; Heb 3:12-14; Heb 12:14-15
- These acts of cooperation are the outworking of the Spirit of God at work in regeneration, and are not therefore works of which we may boast. Titus 2:11-14; 1 John 3:3-9
- That salvation is evidenced by a changed life not the recitation of prayer. Sanctification is ongoing in the believer’s life, and its necessity demonstrates the reality that Christians sin. However we strongly oppose the premise that a person whose lifestyle is characterized by conduct in opposition to God’s Word and character is saved. Saving faith is demonstrated through growth in holiness and conformity to Christ. John 10:27; Romans 6:14; Romans 6:18; Romans 6:22; Romans 8:13-14; Romans 8:29; 1 Cor 6:9- 10; Eph 2:10
- Though lacking a term to describe the event, to reject the possibility of a person losing their salvation is unwise given the numerous passages which suggest this.As an example; Hebrews 10:35- 39 with Vine’s definition of the word destroy with its appearance in Matt 6:12,14,15, 25:14-30, 7: 13-14, 10:28, Mark 11:25,26 John 17:12, 2nd Thessalonians 2:3,
- That disagreement on this doctrine should not be a source of division. We welcome questions, but divisive debates should be avoided.
